This is what I have been working on today. I almost had a break down (No one should take themselves so seriously...) as I was pulling out all the flamboyant pieces of fabric from my well stocked closet. I had created a good old mess, with piles of art supplies on every surface and engulfing the floor around my desk, my breath started shortening... and then I realized I should reign it in a little bit. I ruled out some of the things I was contemplating and got to work. Things are progressing nicely, thanks to my friend Jess for the gold belt that I tore into pieces and Cargo for the free 2011 garden calendar.

I was walking back from a quick bite to eat with my friend Larry the other day when I was reminded that life has magical moments in store for each and everyone of us, if only we open ourselves up to them. We were in the middle of discussing the design choices of the local architects building condos in our area. Larry no sooner brought up the brilliant Frank Lloyd Wright when we stumbled across these two gentlemen and an incredible collection of handmade goods. Needless to say, I saw the beautifully recycled, repurposed, "relifed", shining items on the ground in front of me and I lost all track of our conversation. This chance happening is what I would call a perfect Portland moment, when magic is proven to be real.

I have been carrying around my fathers Canon TX waiting for perfect snapshot opportunities like this. The picture below properly captures the moment, in my eyes. If you wish to get a closer look at this truly creative new friend of mines beautiful vision, you can find his website here.

So I started carrying around my fathers old 35mm camera as of late. I bought film for the first time in probably 5 years, which was more expensive than I remember, but I look forward to hard copy tangibles. I took a great picture today, or at least I think so, but I will have to wait for the proof, since I have not finished the roll and have no LCD screen on the back of this heavy old metal Canon with a lollipop inside.
Until I have the photos developed we'll have to settle for the next best thing, the digital shots I have taken... Here they are in no particular order. <3

I missed the making of Shermtixx's new album "Fun Summer", but listening to it after the fact, I feel like I am taken back in time/space to the place dreams are born.

I just got back home, after a great night bike ride from 134, a communal living situation some of my readers may know a little something about. For those of you who aren't aware, 134 is a collective of artists and musicians living and working in SE Portland. My dear old friend DMLH is currently residing there (A guest is his own home really, since he was one of the people who founded this house.) He is still a glow, having returned home to PDX from his first trip to Burning Man this year just last week. Over noodles and tea we discussed life, love, and art. His mind has been expanded once more and he is already brainstorming new ways for people to get together, create beautiful works, and to celebrate this thing we call life. If DMLH is someone you have been following, then you already know he has been throwing a party once a month at the Rotture/Branx space in SE Portland, called NIGHTSHIFT, but if this is a new concept to you, you should go see for yourself tomorrow night (Wednesday September 21st). Let's all go together and check out how DMLH sees the world and where we can fit in it. I know there's a place for everyone. It's actually happening!

Backyard Monday

It's been so long since I posted last. I was reminded of that when I spoke with a few great old friends the other night. It was such a pleasure to remember that there are people out there in the world who love me and care about what I have to say. I wanted to take this time to catch all you readers up.
I am currently sitting in the backyard, post a wonderful barbecue that occurred here just yesterday. The ambiance is unbelievable, stationed in the afternoon sun; I fear there are not so many warm days like this left this year, so I am trying to take advantage of this one.
The barbecue yesterday was to celebrate the changing of the seasons and I think everyone who attended did it right. I love that we continue to be ever-changing beings growing closer and closer together with the passing of time.
I feel since I haven't shared any images from the last few months with my readers, and I know you all are curious about what I have been doing and creating, that I should: without further adieu I would like to introduce to you: The Summer of Love. Much love to all of you who have enriched and blessed my life throughout the years. I hope you all had as incredible summers as I did, you all deserved it.

Proof of Life

I am 4 days into my first juice fast ever and have been feeling very full of life. I am continually surprised each day how I am able to continue to push on even though there's no caffeine, no alcohol, no refined sugar, no wheat, no cooked foods, no consistency, just juice. I have had the juice from countless carrots, beets, celery, apples, and ginger. Yum! Today, Donny and I went to Prasad in the Pearl district for lunch. Donny had the chili bowl. I got my (what seems like) usual now, the Rita (double yum) and a wheat grass shot (you get the idea). I am also really obsessed with this now due to the whole fasting thing. But now for the point, we then went to the Japanese Gardens, which I have been wanting to see because the cherry blossoms were so great there last time I went, and they are about to pass for the season. The weather was rainy with a chance of sprinkles and as we were getting ready to leave the sun had broken through and I insisted for one more quick stroll around. Here are some of the shots I took, showing that even in the rain and dark and cold, Portland is showing proof of life. I am so ready for some sun and warm weather, but until then I will be grateful for the promise of green. Hope you enjoy... Until next time, I am proud to present: Proof of Life!

While I was in Vermont this incredible shipment from Japan came in. I am a little embarrassed to say that the items I couldn't go home without were these cheap plastic anime characters like you get out of a vending machine... The first thing I did upon coming home from work yesterday was put them together. As I predicted one of the arms won't stay attached. I love this about plastic... Never let's you down. My little friends rest on the shelf with the dinosaurs that reside there already. Delight.

Being sick for most of this week has really made me think about what I do when I'm not sick. I have been so low energy this week and I have been thinking a lot about my body, my mind, and my soul. I feel as though the first 3 weeks of this year have been awfully difficult, but as I lay in bed with my love, listening to music and blogging with tea, I realize how privileged I am. This period of time spent in bed is a time set aside by the powers that be for me to think, browse the internet and be inspired. I am feeling ready to embark on this new year whole heartedly. I rarely set up long term goals for myself, I usually go by moments, but let's go 2011. Let's make it happen.

What I did on my winter break:

This is a shot taken of my love Donny and my friend Katie playing with Buckyballs. These following pictures capture exactly why I am smitten. I spent most of my time trying to perfect the cube, but I was absolutely gaga over this product when I saw the whimsy sculptures done by Katie. Buckyballs have a tendency to always be perfectly balanced, which I feel is shown by these pictures. Katie created most of these pieces by taking a long string and sort of "throwing" it around on the table. Please enjoy the next few glimpses into the pieces of brilliance created by Katie.

One of my last snowy nights spent in Vermont was enjoyed with my mother chatting late into the evening. Our chat got briefly interrupted when I went to grab something from "my" room. She recently redesigned her guest room, which is shown below. My love Donny and my mom's cat Cappuchino display the room with occupants. White on white on white, with a black and white bedspread create a delightfully simple bedroom that beautifully accompanies any individual residing there.

Below are two photos of my nephews playing, one of my favorite moments spent with them this time. Look how happy they are in that bed. Good times!

I woke up Christmas morning in the country. The land where I lived this summer in the bus seems to be ever changing. Three new houses were put up since my last visit. As soon as I could I made my way to the fort I built this summer, to find that the weather had taken it's toll on my hard work. I spent an hour cleaning the space and setting up a winter altar. It was nice to be in a tee-shirt on Christmas outside getting big fresh breaths of air. Hope you all fared well this year too.

i started my halloween costume, and here's what i've got so far, yeup a necklace. lock and key. went to awesome hippo hardware se burnside pdx... picked up these pieces, then over to beads forever on hawthorne and got the chain and wire. whipped it up in a few, and love.

I try to make my posts about things that I am doing creatively in my life. When I don't post for a couple of days I find myself frustrated, but sometimes I am too busy to make things, work has a habit of filling up my time. Don't get me wrong, I love my job... and below are some reasons why... I hate sorrys of this kind, but i am sorry my writing skills are choppy, it's been a long time since I've tried to communicate properly in written word...

Vintage Japanese books, organized by me. Some rebound by me. These books are mainly filled with plays, with careful descriptions on what set designs should look like. Beautiful.

Mini Japanese wig on stand, contained behind glass. (so we got a lot of stuff from Japan this week. Really cool.)

Traditional Japanese wig worn at wedding. Made from real human hair. Comes in really awesome case. Beautiful.

projects: part 2

Evan commissioned me to paint one of his dinosaurs for him. Yesterday I picked this one up from him. He let me chose my favorite of his childhood dinosaurs, so obviously, I picked the one with it's mouth open. (cause I talk a lot and it looks really animated.) The first time using florescent paint since my show in august. It's coming on nicely.

Thanks to Cargo Inc. I had this purple silk sheet lying around. One thing i love about the bus is that you have an instant photo shoot with a piece of fabric and some magnets. Once the space was available i also found myself taking a picture of all my new favorite things.

I finished up the fourth drawing in what will be a series of 12 on lined paper, ball point pen drawings, you may remember...

Have been working on fort, slowly, and as it starts to rain, i wonder if this is it for the year... But it is a work in progress. My friend Jess hung a mobile she made inside. So beautiful and peaceful now. Sanctuary. Here are a collection of photos taken in the fort. It was raining out, that's why for the parasol, to protect the camera.

The rest is for another time. Look forward to the series of photos "through the drinking glass"...

projects: part 1

Over the last couple of days I have had countless hours (less than 42) to come up with projects, revisit old ones, finish up loose ends, cut ties. Create or be creative.
So I've been sewing a lot.

This was a bag I had forgotten all about, until it was regifted back at me the other day. Since returning into my life, this sad bag has been given new life with buttons and button holes, neither of which did it have before.
Below you will see a yarn related project I made this week, cellphone/camera cozy.

I also took some parts and made this piece. Purple rose: found object from Donny, parrot feather: plucked from Mady, Purple ribbon: given from Nina, and black velvet: found on side of road.
All sewn together to a hair pin. Again, put feathers on backwards and am dissatisfied with final project, no matter how cute it is. Must achieve perfection.

So, that's not all but, now it's time for bed. So, until tomorrow, I bid you adieu.

today was another great day. it's ending at a high note: almondbutter/honey/banana sandwich. dangerous/delicious. went shopping with boyfriend which was silly and fun. picked lots of berries at home, knit, and took photos. all in all a wonderful day.

the bus at night

It has now been one full month that donny and i have been occupying this bus. I took the two photos above last night before letting the curtain down and crawling under the big down blanket. Outside the bus, the weather is nice due to an over-casty sky. The grass is long, and the thistles and queen anne's lace are about to pass as summer turns into fall. Makes me want to break out the pretty lights "summer's gone" track from the dust covered shelf in itunes.

started the installation today. found out again how big the trunk of the benz is. realized why i have so many pieces of fabric and gauze and tissue paper lying around all the time. and i remembered what friends are for... i really want to do some shout outs, i have been concocting them for some time now, the thank yous. i don't want it to get too out of control so i will start with my family at scratch (lake oswego, oregon), for without which i would not have had the flexible schedule to create most of this work or the finances in which to have the supplies it took to create it. i want to thank cargo(pearl district, pdx) for the constant inspiration, appreciation, and for all of the things they have donated to this show. please understand that without either of these businesses i would not have been able to have made this possible. moving time

as it comes down to crunch time i find myself in panic mode. the smallest of tasks seems unbearable to perform, but i find myself moving forward with the breeze of time none the less. donny has been crashing at my place for the last week and it's made the space tight, but cozy. the work is progressing with what seems like little help from me. it is culminating as each box is packed, layers of scarves and jewelry and bags and bags and clothes. the art supplies are still scattered around the room, waiting desperately to be picked up and used.

this show is about progress. i moved to portland with a hiking backpack and three months later moved into this house in the back of a subaru. I had very little when i first moved, and as i make the next move out of the space, i am finding i have so much. This house has provided for me. i will miss it when i am gone from it. there will always be a part of me that longs for this room, for this kind of comfort.

personal narrative. that's what my work is. it shows my growth as an individual, as an artist. the 2-dimensional work is comprised of mainly self portraits, where as the 3-dimensional work is more about the growth. They feed off one another, as the 3-dimensional work gets built, the self-portraits get a little bit brighter and more dynamic and as that happens the trees start to grow and the waterfall starts to flow. the fractals split and break and create more patterns.

i am not fully sure what changes have occurred in me over the last two years. it's hard to point at something that is different and explain how it has changed, but i do know that i am changing whether i like it or not. things around me are changing too. this work catalogues my progress artistically. this blog chronologically categorizes the progressions made over the time that i have been working on this series of pieces.

in the next few days i am going to try to put up as many progress documentation... that's definitely been an important part of the process. so here's some shots for you!

I have been introduced to a lot of things since I've moved to Portland... Here is one of the things I've been working on in life. Food is such an important part of my happiness. I have found healthy food to happiness ratio is good... Friends over the last 2 and half years have introduced me to many healthy food alternatives. In the pictures above you will see the artistic creation of bright colorful salad rolls. Carrots, micro greens, bean sprouts, cabbage, cilantro, arugula, and red pepper, wrapped in a salad roll rice wrapper, with a thai peanut dipping sauce = totally delicious.
I sometimes get down on myself for not doing things I think of as "creative", but every time I make the space in my life for food preparation, I find my creative juices satiated and I can sleep well at night.

I have been housesitting for the last week. I have been without the space to create and as some of you may know, I have been without a proper camera for some time, to document the work with, but as I said before I'm back! and ready for the madness to start. Guests have come and gone over the last week and a half, infiltrating life into 134. I partook in a baby shower, a halloween party, an art opening, and hours of work, sleep, drinking and cleaning... So no wonder I was inspired by all this to complete this new piece. <3

I have been painting every day before work. I am working on a collection of work to make an installation with. I know you probably know, but I am putting it down in writing as much as possible so I will stick to the goals I have set for myself.

Stuffed animals are the only thing on my mind right now. For a full year now I have been preparing a large installation. The bamboo trees, the light installations, the hand made flat sheet of paper, and now the stuffed animals. My Installation (in progress now) will ideally be set up for a solo show before February 2010 to go towards a portfolio of current/up to date work made by me for a masters program. Wee... I have a lot of work to do, so I am signing off. More in the coming weeks.

On my walk home from Donny's house today, I found a matte white ceiling lamp, which I took home, spray painted green and started coloring on with permanent marker. It is filled with christmas lights and will be hung from my ceiling as soon as it is completed. Cool, huh?

I am often down on myself about not using my days off to their fullest, but today I decided to document all the things I did photographically and blog about it so that if one day I feel the need, I can look back and say, "Hey, I do do a lot." I woke up at Sarah Ruth's house today, went to the grocery store, made waffles, cleaned the bathroom, cleaned the table on the back porch, and straightened Sarah's hair. I also hung with my girl Mady, am about to go grocery shopping again, to cook dinner for Donny and me, and wrap up the night with a little Lost watching. Hope everyone out there reading this felt like they had a big sunday too. <3

After a week of being sick, being visited, changing jobs, eating good food, and going non-stop, I sat by myself long enough this morning to take a couple self-portraits. I went out to a work party the other night for our 1 year anniversary, and found myself face-down in the toilet with the green remnants of frosting late in the evening, form now on "they" will call me cupcake. On another note, I made another cupcake. Here's some shots of it.

Cupcakes have always been my favorite birthday present; I can never get enough of them in my life really, then I started knitting them. I made up a pattern in my head, having never made one before, and here are two that I created in the last 2 weeks. One was a gift and the other was commissioned. If you have a special day that's coming up, and want to give the gift of food that will last forever, gimme a day or two notice, and I will create a special cakie for your special friend.

After scrolling through several different groupings of photos, I found that I had been obsessively clicking shots of Miss Mady Hampton and realized that she had become my muse. There Is something with the combination of her hair, her blues, and the fact that I always see her in somewhat of a sunny setting that is intriguing and eye catching. The papermaking process has started. I made three mock up leaves and have a large flat piece drying, all made out of one newspaper and a bus pass. Also, I made an apple today from the start of a scarf for my friend Shannon, started 3 years ago. I had to cut an elephants neck to take the stuffing for the juicy center... My roommate told me that elephants never forget and I'm sorry for that, but it's the circle of life... At least that's what Disney told me.

Lately, as I'm sure you've seen, I've been taking a lot more photos, than any other form of creative expression. I do have to say my drawings are getting stronger, but still need more work before I will be including them on this blog. I have been taking photos to document my life, visually representing the things I see on a regular basis. The photos are the start of an image file for my new project I'm working on. It started last summer with an idea of "myspace" being an art installation in my bedroom, and has transformed into something larger and better or smaller and greater, I'm not quite sure, but you will find the bamboo project involved with this new installation called Natural Magic, as well as these photos and drawings by me, and whatever else I can fit in. This collection of photos makes no sense as a group except they show groupings of things. Just a little glimpse into my everyday/not so everyday life. Hope you enjoy.
